Black History Month --- Or African American History Month celebrated February 1 through March 1,  was first named “Negro History Week,” which began in the United States by historian, Carter G. Woodson,  and other renowned African Americans.

Black History Month has been commemorated in the month of February since 1976, and may have more meaning for those of us who share a black heritage. While all races join in our holidays and some celebrations, our black (African American) history reminds us that we matter, and are significant to the landscape of this country. Booker T. Washington once said, “ Character, not circumstance, makes the person.” How true…

This month-long observance includes the noble efforts of Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and  activist, who was honored in January during his birthday month. Civil Rights Activist Martin Luther King, noted leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his death in 1968, achieved greatness for his civil rights expansion, doing so without the use of violence or civil disobedience. He is best known for his speech “ I have a dream.” Black History Month, observed annually, is now recognized in Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, and in Ireland. We celebrate all month long with respect, love of heritage and honor.

The abolition of slavery is remembered with the birthday of Frederick Douglass, February 1818-February 1895. He was a statesman, writer, orator, and abolitionist. He, a previous slave himself, became a leader championing the movement against slavery and is hailed for his talent as a speaker.

Where would we be without the thought of Hank Aaron, another great who was graced with a  birthday  in February. Hank Aaron, the “Hammer,” awarded with the National League Most Valuable Player in 1957, the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1970, the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Sports Figure in 1975, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2002 was a 25-time All Star with 755 homeruns. He played the great American sport of baseball for the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers.

"And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." ~ Abraham Lincoln

In February we also celebrate Presidents’ Day (some say month) on Monday, the 15th. All American Presidents are revered this month for their achievements in history while Presidents Lincoln (February 12) --- and Washington (February 22), have birthdays.

February 12 is also Chinese New Year, 2021. We honor the Year of the Ox with parades and other festivities held to bring in the New Year in the Chinese culture.

February 14 --- I love you more…

Valentine’s Day --- the one singled-out day of love, is another significant February “holiday”  that we observe. While this year, particularly, February 14 may look a bit different, the meaning is there --- expressing love, friendship, gratefulness, and respect for others, as well as for our significant other.  COVID-19 dictates how celebrations of the heart may be honored by suspending indoor restaurant dining this year, however, while in many towns outdoor dining may be permitted. Loved Ones, however, may opt for in-home dining, serving up a romantic venue or flair. This might include the family…or not.

February Fun Fact:

-The months of January and February were added last to the Roman calendar (c.713 BC).

Winter was considered to be only one month long.

Although February is a cold month typically, show some warmth to those you love and care for as you remember CA&C Video Productions for your next video session.
