December --- A Month of Beauty
The last month of the year is one of the most beautiful, and busiest times of the year. We, in the form of thoughtful gifts --- monetary, physical, and that of time spent, show our love and good cheer toward others. Some may choose to pay it forward with the thought of the Christ Child, while others choose more obvious ways. We “love our neighbors as ourselves” as the Bible says, and we show that gratitude in many, often, unique forms.
A special gift --- Rosa Louise Parks, “the first lady of civil rights” was an African-American heroine who helped to end racial segregation on public transportation. She was a courageous woman who changed the ideals of the government, but also, how we interact with others. She stood up for her own principles while keeping her seat. She became known for what she did to help end an era. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. After being arrested, she helped to change America’s view to how division is unconstitutional, and how hurtful it can be. Ms. Parks was presented with several awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Christmas … the birth of Jesus, “the Reason for the season.” Our hearts unburden as they turn to thoughtfulness, random and neighborly acts of kindness, being a Good Samaritan, and thought-provoking ways to help and show love to our fellow man.
We dress up trees and neighborhoods with lights to show the way as did the angels on the night of Jesus’ birth. We send cards as a way to remember others, and we shop “‘til we drop” to find the perfect gifts just as the wisemen brought. We show respect for others as in the coming of the Christ Child by partaking in the glad announcement with respect. As in the Christmas Carol, The Little Drummer Boy, “our finest gifts we bring,” is a lesson in reverence taught to us on that holy night. Gifts of kindheartedness at Christmas and throughout the year remind us to pay it forward, give, share, and always love. Emulating the acts of the wisemen, we are prompted to share what we have, treat others as we would like to be treated, and most of all, love God, and love others.
Happy New Year! This hearty exclamation of joy ends a year, perhaps an era. On December 31, we will pay homage to the last day of the year to celebrate with all that we have. We celebrate in many ways; however, whether we stay safe at home, or hit the town running, we remember the number rule on New Year’s Eve is to ensure safety. If it’s Rockin’ Eve on TV or out dancing at a party, displays of fireworks or banging pots and pans --- when midnight strikes, we will bid a fond (or not) farewell to 2021.
New Year’s Day is January 1 --- a time for fresh beginnings, to take stock and try again. (We’ll get it right one of these years.) We welcome the new year by making (whether ultimately kept or not) new year’s resolutions. We “promise” to walk more, stop procrastinating, join a gym, be healthier overall, start a business, or --- perhaps, write a book. If creating resolutions is on your agenda for 2022, we wish you every success. Remember that January 1 is not only the first day of the new year, but also a time to reflect, stay active, plan ahead, be happy and be kind.
